Modestly Bold
Spring is officially here!! It’s been a long time coming, but it’s safe to say that
the warm weather is here to stay! Despite the sporadic rainy days, to welcome
spring is to welcome a fresh start – a rejuvenated attitude. It is evident that with
higher temperatures comes dramatic wardrobe shifts, especially among our
generation. Days are hotter, shorts are shorter; temperatures increase, clothing
decreases. However, when it comes to us in the body of Christ, we are to be
reminded of the standard that we hold as children of God.
Modesty has become such a controversial topic in our society, and is basically
seen as taboo amongst the younger generation. Most people believe that modesty
only means covering yourself up from head to toe, even when it’s 100 degrees
outside! Although there is no problem with covering up, there is more to the concept
of modesty than that. It has to do with not only what you wear, but also why you
wear it; “why” in terms of the meaning behind it. 1 Timothy, Paul gives us an
overview of the influence and power that we have a young people:
“Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all
believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.
Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the
believers, and teaching them.” (1 Timothy 4:12-13 NLT)
Paul goes on to tell Timothy to keep an eye on the way that he lives and his
teaching, in terms of how he influences those around him. As Christians, our job is to
be a blessing everywhere we go – to provide encouragement and guidance to those
that are joining the faith daily. When we take on that role to encourage and uplift,
there is a message that we send out in the things that we say, the things that we do,
and the clothes that we wear. Modesty in clothing is merely scratching the surface of
it all. ChristLife serves as a beacon of encouragement with the various messages on
each hoodie, T-shirt, and even accessories.
As children of God, it is important to be aware of the message that we put out
in our everyday lives. When it comes to women of God it is necessary to preserve
your purity and virtue, and dressing modestly can not only prevent temptation of
your fellow brothers in Christ, but it can also serve as an example for your younger
sisters in Christ. The same goes for men of God – purity is not exactly a word used in
the same sentence as “men” nowadays. However, it is just as important for men as it
is for women! Men lead by example, so it is important to not only keep your fellow
sisters from falling into temptation, but to also provide a standard for your younger
brothers to follow. What we say, where we go, what we do, and what we wear all
plays a part in this walk with Christ. Let us not be looked down on because of our
youth; instead, let us embrace the power embedded in us for God’s glory.
